Researchers offer tool to break into Oracle database systems

Posted by Paul Mah | Oracle Database | Friday 24 July 2009 10:42 am

Security experts Chris Gates and Mario Ceballos plan to release tools for breaking into Oracle Database systems during their presentation on "Oracle Pentesting Methodology" at the Black Hat and Defcon hacker conferences next week.

The various attacks will be implemented as Metasploit auxiliary modules and seek to exploit vulnerabilities discovered in Oracle's flagship database product over the years. Metasploit is an open-source platform commonly used by security experts to run penetration tests on internal systems for the purpose of discovery and attack mitigation.

Gates told CNET that he has not contacted Oracle about his presentation, since the exploits that he will be presenting are not new and ways to mitigate them are already public.

"If administrators haven't applied the patches, then the databases were/are vulnerable," Gates told the website, noting that "These tools just help streamline the penetration testing process." Organizations serious about security will benefit by grabbing the modules once they are available and running the exploits against their own systems to ensure that all relevant patches have been installed.

Oracle hikes some prices 40 percent

Posted by Judi Hasson | Oracle Database | Saturday 18 July 2009 11:27 am

These are tough times and managers are trying to keep expenses down, but apparently no one told that to Oracle.

Oracle took an amazingly risky step, by raising the cost of some of its management options for its flagship database by 40 percent, according to a pricing list available on July 1, InfoWorld reports. And the price hikes weren't minor. Processor licenses for the company's diagnostic and tuning backs, as well as a database configuration management packs increased to $5,000, up from $3,500.

The article noted that list prices are rarely what companies actually pay for software, but it does raise the starting point for discount negotiations, making the final number higher than what customers previously might have expected. This may be a game of outfoxing the fox, Forrester Research analyst Ray Wang, told InfoWorld. It may allow an IT manager to get a bigger discount on a higher-priced product, making him look good to the bosses.

Whatever the game is, it's definitely another example of how rough the market has become. Be careful, strategic and tough.

Sun shareholders approve merger with Oracle

Posted by Paul Mah | Oracle Database | Friday 17 July 2009 11:06 am

Sun Microsystems has announced that its shareholders have voted in favor of a merger with software juggernaut Oracle. Of course, the acquisition will still have to cross the desk of the U.S. Department of Justice, though Oracle appears to be confident of that hurdle. When news of an Oracle-Sun deal first emerged in April, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was reportedly at a loss for words. VMware moves to lure Virtual Iron users with discounts

Posted by Paul Mah | Oracle Database | Friday 10 July 2009 5:31 am

In a bid to lure customers left stranded from Oracle's apparent decision to halt development of Virtual Iron products, virtualization pioneer VMware is offering a "safe passage" plan to Virtual Iron customers. This includes discounts on cost of support and subscription contracts on certain products, as well as a steep 40 percent discount off the list price for the Advanced Edition and Enterprise Plus Edition of its newest vSphere 4 product. Also included are its vCenter ServerFoundation and vCenter Server Standard products.

Oracle acquired Virtual Iron in May. Barely a month later, the database giant sent a letter to Virtual Iron's more than 1,500 sales partners to inform them that it "will suspend development of existing Virtual Iron products and will suspend delivery of orders to new customers." Oracle will instead integrate the technology into its own Oracle VM platform.

Charles King, an analyst with Pund-IT Research summed up the situation that VMware apparently hopes to exploit, "If migrating to a new platform is required, why not consider an entirely new vendor as well?"
